Writer: Lizette EppsLizette Epps

Embarking on the journey of writing your first book is not just a task; it's an exhilarating adventure. It's a path filled with learning, creativity, challenges, and personal growth. Whether you're brimming with story ideas or struggling to start, I'm here to guide you through these 10 essential steps. From brainstorming your book idea to celebrating your book launch, you'll find practical tips to turn your dream of becoming an author into a reality in 2025. Let's dive into this exciting journey together!

1.     Building Habits That Help You Write Consistently

When I debuted my book to the world, one of the questions I would get asked regularly was, "How hard is it to sit and write"?  While the words did not always come quickly, establishing routines made all the difference in my journey. To focus on writing consistently, you must get your writing life in order.  The first place to start is setting clear goals and focusing on your "why," which will be the foundation and key starting point for building consistency. Pick a goal like writing for 10 minutes, or 500 words, or a chapter at a time daily.  If you are stuck with writer's block, try switching up where you do your writing, doing some free writing, or write another section and then go back.  It is ok to step away and come back to it once you are clearheaded. Since the goal is more about momentum and forward progress, you will be able to build consistency through daily practice. Before you know it, you will have hit significant milestones in your writing.

2.     Outlining 101: Create a Blueprint for Your Book

Outlines are super helpful in establishing a well-structured book.  Start by answering the question, "What can I share that no one else can?" From there, identify your audience: young adults, parents, or entrepreneurs. This will be your target audience and should be at the forefront of your mind as you write so you can keep your content on track.   Next, you want to outline the book structure, which will become the chapters.  Map out the key points with each chapter, walking you from the beginning to

the end in a logical order that will be easy for readers to follow and stay engaged with.

3.     How to Gather Insights and Inspiration for Your Book

Life experiences, observations, and research are excellent sources of inspiration for your book.  Read other books, watch documentaries, and conduct interviews to gather information that will enrich your work.  I spent a year interviewing people for my book, and when I read all the interviews, I found common threads that tied them to the chapters I had outlined.  Understanding what captivates you as a reader and evokes emotion is key to applying it to your writing.  Keep a notebook or digital file to organize your insights and research.  This can be anything from facts to quotes that add value to your story.  Personal experiences and observations that align are great sources of inspiration.  It's important to absorb information in a way that works for you, allowing your creativity to flow.

4.      Track Your Progress and Stay Motivated While Writing

Strategy and discipline are essential combos needed to write a book.  Carving out the dedicated time to write and treating it like a meeting you cannot miss will serve you well and keep you engaged.  With your roadmap established, you can start to tackle your book in small, manageable portions.  This will allow you to make progress and have small wins to celebrate.  Apps and tools like Trello, Scrivener, or even a spreadsheet can help track your progress.  Set some realistic goals for yourself and page by page, celebrate your small wins, and reward yourself for being accountable. Just keep writing; before you know it, you will have all the motivation you need to finish your manuscript!

5.     Overcoming First-Draft Fear and Finding Your Flow

As you work through your outline, each section you complete gets you closer to achieving your first draft.  By no means is writing a race to the finish.  First drafts are not perfect; they are supposed to be imperfect so that you can refine them throughout the process.  In this draft, you are getting everything out of your head and onto paper.  We are our own harshest critics, and this is where you must silence the voice in your head that tells you it is not good enough. When I completed my manuscript, I celebrated myself!  It was a huge milestone to get to, and it required motivation and discipline to get there.    My best advice is to let your thoughts flow into your writing; before you know it, you will have your draft in hand for polishing later.

6.     Polish Your Manuscript: The Art of Revision and Editing

When you have completed your first draft, take the time to read through it section by section.  You want to ensure the content is clear, coherent, and flows well.  If something is unclear, go back and rewrite it.  Writing tight is essential, so ensure there are no run-on sentences, remove unnecessary words, and ensure that each section flows seamlessly to the next.  You want progress in your story to be forward.  Next, send copies to trusted friends/peers who will provide honest feedback.  You can also find beta readers to do this for you as well.  After you receive the feedback, make the edits you feel are applicable and get your manuscript to a professional editor to help refine the document.  Their job is not just to fix any errors; it is to help enhance the story and make it stand out.

7.     How to Navigate the World of Publishing as a First-Time Author

The publishing world is overwhelming, so understanding how the world works is important!  Traditional publishing is a very competitive space with slow processes that come with a lot of credibility, support, and resources for authors.  To pitch to a traditional publisher, you must hire a literary agent, have a strong pitch, and have a polished manuscript.  Self-publishing requires more work and upfront costs from you as the author. Still, it affords you creative control over every step of the process and higher royalties.  You are also able to get your work to market a lot faster than traditional publishing does.  If you have not had the chance to check out my last blog post, How to Self-Publish a Book: The Ultimate Beginner's Guide, I go more in-depth into the differences between each type of publishing.  Look at the sections on debunking the myths to weigh the differences for yourself.  In either instance, research and explore the best path to remain proactive, flexible, and persistent.

8.     Make Your Book Shine: Formatting and Design Essentials

Proper formatting and design are essential for each type of book you produce, whether print or eBook.  Print has its own requirements, so you want to ensure you use the proper font, line spacing, and margins.  Digital books require optimization for e-reader devices and have different formatting and flow requirements per device.  In addition to the formatting, your book cover will need attention and investment to make it stand out.  As your book's face to the world, it should make a great first impression.  Your cover should ensure clarity when reading the title and author name.  Graphics and typography should be high quality to make them pop and get readers' attention.  Finally, proofread everything!  Check for grammar, punctuation, and formatting errors.  A professional proofreader is with it to ensure your book is polished and error-free before publishing your book for the world to see.  Take a look at the initial rough draft and the finished cover for “Our Voices” it was a process; but the journey was well worth it!

9.     How to Build Buzz and Promote Your First Book

Building buzz around your book is fun but requires establishing some online presence.  Start with your social media pages and tap into the audience you already have.  Create a professional website and connect your social media to it so that you can cross-share behind-the-scenes content, engaging posts, and upcoming release information.  It is key to keep your potential readers up today about forthcoming releases and posting content to keep them interested in you.  Leverage as many online tools as possible to reach a wider audience.  Targeted online ads and email marketing can help you to offer value and build anticipation for your event.  Collaborate with book influencers, bloggers, and even other authors to help spread the word about your book.  Keep posting consistently, and you will grow your base in no time!

10.     Sharing Your Journey and Celebrating Your Success

Sharing your success and celebrating all the wins are essential in connecting with others and building your brand as an author. Start by planning a book launch and building up the hype for the event, where you can engage with your audience, share your story, showcase your hard work, and sell and sign books. Express your gratitude to everyone who supported you, and discuss the challenges, lessons, and victories you experienced along the way. Let your audience know what’s coming next, and remember, this journey isn’t about being better than anyone else; it’s about celebrating YOU!
